Wood Roof Project in Mendham, NJ

For many homeowners, the decision to install a wood roof can be a challenging one. For one thing, new products on the market offer a simulated wood roof look, an alternative that can have cost advantages for the homeowner. But still, there’s nothing like the look and prestige of a professionally installed wood roof. For homeowners with an existing cedar roof in need of replacement, for example, there’s simply no alternative but to install a new cedar roof.

Uneda Roof has installed many wood roofs in the Morris County, NJ area over the years. We recently completed a cedar roof project in Mendham, NJ, involving a 7000 square-foot roof. The homeowner wanted to maintain the look of the original cedar roof.

In this case, the homeowner opted for 24″ grade “A” hand-split cedar shingles which we installed with a 7.5″ exposure rather than the typical 9″ exposure. This provides a more substantial look to the finished roof, and it also increases the life of the roof. For extra durability, we installed a layer of #30 felt between each course as a vapor barrier.

We installed the copper valleys with a wider than usual reveal — 5″ on each side, rather than the usual 3″ reveal — allowing debris to flow more smoothly.

It’s standard practice for us to use copper flashing and zinc coated with cedar roof installations to prevent interactions with the cedar that could discolor the wood and detract from the overall appearance.
