We recently finished installing a new CertainTeed roof in Parsippany, NJ . The old roof had leaked, allowing moisture to seep onto the roof decking below. The existing decking was a combination of plywoood and planking. We tore off the existing decking down to the roof joists (pictured above), and replaced it with new plywood (pictured below).

It’s often difficult to tell when roof decking needs to be replaced. A simple visual inspection from the ground is not enough. Many times, problems can only be identified through careful inspection of the roof from on the roof itself and from attic spaces. Mold, damp or soggy attic insulation, and discolored or warped decking and joists are red flags. We perform a thorough inspection each time we’re called out on a new roofing project.

An improperly ventilated attic is one of the leading causes of roof deterioration. When there’s heat buildup in the attic, there’s extra wear and tear on roof materials — from decking to moisture barriers to the shingles themselves. Premature roof failure translates to additional expense for the homeowner, not to mention higher energy bills, particularly when heat can’t escape from the home effectively during summer months.

In recent years, many companies have turned their efforts to improving attic ventilation, and fortunately a variety of products now exist to help improve attic ventilation and extend the life of the roof. Other such products include louvers, ridge vents, and passive turbines. Today we’re able to recommend a number of products to homeowners using our services.

For example, we recently installed a GAF Master Flow Power Vent for a homeowner in Parsippany, NJ. The built-in thermostatically controlled fan prevents excessive heat buildup in the attic. Insulated siding is a relatively new breed of product on the market. We recently completed a siding installation project in Flanders, NJ using Crane foam-backed siding. This particular siding is known as CraneBoard Double 7. It’s designed to mimic 7″ board-width cedar siding. The model we installed here has an R-value of 4.0 and a deep-shadowed profile for a distinctive architectural appearance.

Why bother having siding that insulates? Crane’s SmartCore system means that their insulated siding has an R-value of four times that of conventional vinyl siding. This can be particularly helpful for older, less well insulated homes, but it can also have an impact on the energy efficiency of homes constructed using more modern insulating techniques. Special ridges allow moisture to evaporate away from the siding, ensuring that moisture is managed efficiently.

Crane trim, which gives the appearance of wood, also reflects the designer’s concern for the overall finished look and beauty of the home.

We find a complete siding installation including CraneBoard Double 7 to be an excellent choice for energy conscious homeowners who don’t want to sacrifice appearance.
